The driving force of the 1980’s New York Art Scene, Maripol’s intuitive eye quickly became synonymous with the sen- suality that the era embodied. Her numerous collaborations with artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Deborah Harry, Grace Jones bred tales that rapidly grew into urban legends.Armed solely with her faithful polaroid, Maripol seeks to capture instantaneity, spontaneity. But there is always a haze of nostalgia that passes over the lens, for though the camera prints out the photo just seconds after the shutter has clicked, the moment captured has passed; it is memorialized on paper but is rooted in memory. However, this is not a loss to be mourned, it is liberating. Maripol’s art allows us to live in the present moment, fondly remembering the past but wholly embracing the now.
